The Service

What Is Electrical Installation Testing?

Electrical installation testing is the testing and certification of new or altered electrical work — a new circuit, a consumer unit upgrade, an addition or a rewired property — to confirm it's safe and meets the wiring regulations.

New notifiable work must be tested and certified, usually with an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), and the Building Control notification handled. The tests verify earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, RCD operation and the overall safety of the installation.

What's Included

What's Typically Involved

  • A full test of the new or altered installation
  • Verification of earthing, insulation, polarity and protection
  • Issue of an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) for new work
  • Building Control notification where the work is notifiable
  • A clear record of the installation's compliance

Why It Matters

Why Professional Electrical Work Matters

New electrical work that isn't tested and certified is unverified — you can't know it's safe. Testing confirms the installation is correctly built, protected and safe to energise.

Notifiable work done without certification can cause problems when selling a property or making an insurance claim. Proper testing and certification protect the work and the property.

Costs & Pricing

Costs & What Affects Pricing

Pricing for electrical work depends on the job. Here are the factors that typically affect the cost of this service.

  • The extent of the work to be tested
  • Whether an EIC needs issuing
  • Whether Building Control notification is needed
  • Whether any defects found need remedial work
  • The age and accessibility of the installation

Testing and certifying existing new work costs less than redoing it. If the work has defects, remedial work is quoted separately. Tell us what was installed.
